Concussion Symptoms- An Overview

Concussion is a term that is often taken lightly. But not many people realize that concussion is an indicator of a traumatic brain injury. As such concussion symptoms should not be taken lightly. There is a great amount of possibility that when a person is concussed, damage to the brain is caused in the hiding.

The damage thus caused to the brain can be temporary as well as permanent. Effects of brain damage can be very frustrating. A person can have severe changes in his or her lifestyle. Thus signs of concussion should be paid great attention to.

Symptoms of a concussion are regarded as very identical to that of a mild brain injury. It can include severe or mild headaches, loss of hearing, ringing in the ears, problems in remembering things, problems in concentration, getting irritated quickly, dizziness and also fatigue. All these symptoms create a kind of frustration in the patient. For some people these symptoms can occur for a certain period of time and then disappear. But for others the symptoms may persist for long; and this is where the problem aggravates.

Cognitive problems are also among the symptoms of concussion. They include poor levels of attention, difficulties in memorizing things, becoming an easy prey to stress, finding difficulties in remaining active, experiencing uncontrollable anger, becoming self-centered, too much dependency on others, impulsivity and also having lack of insight.

These symptoms can together lead to a variety of other problems in a person like lack of motivation, poor social and interactive skills, depression and also lack of emotional control. Although not everybody with concussion will experience all the symptoms rather they can experience one or two of the symptoms.

But if more than three symptoms of concussion occur in a person then there is a real matter to be worried about.

The two most common symptoms of a concussion are amnesia and confusion. There are also physical symptoms of concussion which can be as debilitating and frustrating as the cognitive symptoms. Physical symptoms include loss of smell and taste, seizures, epilepsy, headaches, chronic pain, problems in vision, paralysis or loss of sensation in some parts of the body, fatigue and dizziness.

Recovery from head injuries are delayed in most cases because of the persistent occurrence of different symptoms of concussion. What is required here is concussion treatment with a bit of rest and also constant monitoring of the concussion symptoms. If the patient of concussion is a child, far greater care should be taken. Because concussion in toddlers and infants cannot be recognized easily as they cannot communicate their suffering.
